OpenAI Simplifies Model Branding with GPT-5 Release
OpenAI is overhauling its model naming conventions, phasing out numerical designations in favor of a unified identity under GPT-5. The move, revealed during a Reddit AMA with Core Codex researchers, aims to streamline user experience by eliminating confusion between model versions and interfaces.
The company’s coding assistant, Codex, currently operates through two primary channels—ChatGPT and Codex CLI—each powered by distinct model variants like codex-1 and codex-mini. GPT-5 will consolidate these fragmented offerings, enabling access to full capabilities without version switching.
"GPT-5 represents our commitment to seamless AI integration," stated VP of Research Jerry Tworek. The rebranding signals OpenAI’s maturation from experimental releases to enterprise-ready solutions, mirroring cryptocurrency’s evolution from niche tech to institutional adoption.
